Thomas Milic starts for Canada against Sweden at World Juniors - TSN

Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Thomas Milic will get the start in net for Team Canada for their important New Year's Eve clash against Sweden at the World Junior Hockey Championship, head coach Dennis Williams confirmed on Friday.

You can watch the game against Sweden LIVE from Scotiabank Arena in Halifax Saturday at 6:30pm ET/3:30pm PT on TSN 1/4/5 and stream on TSN.ca or the TSN App.

Milic, a 19-year-old native of Coquitlam, B.C., has allowed two goals on 26 shots over two games for Canada at the World Juniors. He relieved Ben Gaudreau in the opener against Czechia after Gaudreau allowed five goals on 17 shots. Milic stopped all 10 of the shots he faced as Canada dropped the game 5-2. Milic also got the start for Wednesday's rout of Germany, allowing two goals on 16 shots.

Canada went back to Gaudreau on Thursday against Austria as the third-round draft pick of the San Jose Sharks stopped 12 shots for the 11-0 shutout victory.

In his fourth season of Western Hockey League play, Milic has an 11-2-1 record with a 2.35 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Sweden's Carl Lindbolm has arguably been the best goalie so far at the World Juniors, posting a 3-0 record, highlighted by a pair of shutouts and allowing just two goals on a total of 76 shots.

The Swedes are currently leading Group A with eight points, followed by Czechia with seven and Canada with six. Germany and Austria have yet to record a point going into their last round-robin game against each other.

The top four teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

Canada's Connor Bedard on pace to break Peter Forsberg's World Juniors points record - TSN

Team Canada is three games into the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship and the record watch is on for Connor Bedard.

The projected first overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft has six goals and 14 points through Canada's first three games and is on pace to break Peter Forsberg's record for points in a single tournament, should Canada reach the medal round.

You can watch every game of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship LIVE on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

ContentId(1.1899382): Bedard continues to chase history as Canada powers past Austria

Forsberg posted 31 points in seven games at the 1993 tournament, a number that has never otherwise been close to being touched in world juniors history.

Forsberg's teammate that year, Markus Naslund, is tied for the second-most points all-time in a tournament with 24 along with Finland's Raimo Helminen, who set the record there in 1984.

Bedard is just six points away from becoming only the seventh player in tournament history to reach the 20-point mark. Forsberg, Naslund and Halminen are joined in that category by Robert Reichel (21 points in 1990), Vladimir Ruzicka (20 points in 1983) and Esa Keskinen (20 points in 1985).

The 17-year-old is also closing in on becoming the only Canadian player to ever top 18 points in a tournament. Dale McCourt (1977) and Brayden Schenn (2011) both sit at 18 for the most-ever by a Canadian.

Dale McCourt (1977)  9 10 18
 Brayden Schenn (2011) 11 8 18
 Wayne Gretzky (1978) 14 8 17
Mason McTavish (2022) 16 8 17
Eric Lindros (1991) 17 6 17
 Dylan Cozens (2021) 21 8 16
 Cody Hodgson (2009) 23 5 16

If Canada reaches the medal round, Bedard will have four more games to add to his point total at the 2023 tournament. He's currently averaging 4.66 points per game and is on pace to finish with 33 points - 32.6 to be exact - which would break the all-time record.

The all-time goals record at tournament could also be Bedard's if he keeps up his current pace. With six goals through three games, he's on pace to record 14 total for the tournament, which would top Naslund's all-time record of 13 in 1993.

Stiffer competition to come for Bedard?

After an opening upset loss to Czechia, in which Bedard was held to a single goal, the phenom feasted on Germany and Austria, totalling 13 points as Canada score 22 goals over the two wins.

However, Canada will wrap up their round-robin play on Saturday against Sweden and points will likely be harder to come by against the Group A leaders. Through three games, Sweden has scored 15 goals and allowed just two to opponents, while every other team at the tournament has allowed at least five.

ContentId(1.1899394): Bedard remains humble as he ties Eberle's record

For his part, Bedard has tried to keep the focus on team success over his individual achievements as they begin to pile up at the world juniors. He tied Jordan Eberle's all-time Canadian mark of 14 career goals at the men's under-20 event in Thursday's win over Austria, and his 27 total points at the world juniors are just four back of the national record held by Eric Lindros.

"I'm another player on the team," Bedard said. "We've got so many guys that are special players. I'm just here as one of the guys.

"And obviously trying to contribute."

Canada beats Austria World Juniors Connor Bedard Jordan Eberle - TSN

Connor Bedard scored two goals in Canada's lopsided 11-0 win over Austria Thursday night in Halifax, matching Jordan Eberle's Canadian record for goals at the World Junior Championship with 14.

The projected No. 1 overall pick in next summer's NHL Draft led the offensive charge with six total points as Canada reached the double-digit goal mark for the second straight night. He tied the record on a third-period goal off an assist from Logan Stankoven.

You can watch every game of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship LIVE on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

“Every time he has the puck on his stick, something’s coming from it," Canada head coach Dennis Williams said of Bedard after the game.

"Their creativity and skillset, you’re seeing some chemistry between himself, [Stankoven] and [Joshua] Roy there. So, it’s nice to see and obviously they’re building confidence throughout these games.”

Bedard heaped heavy praise on his linemate for setting him up to match the record.

“I wasn’t thinking about it too much, but I think some of the guys kind of mentioned it there in the third. Obviously a good play by [Logan Stankoven] there in the third, I think anyone could have put that one in. He made it pretty easy to get it," the 17-year-old Regina Pats star said.

Bedard had a hat trick and four assists in Canada's 11-2 victory over Germany Wednesday night.

He scored four goals at the original 2022 World Junior Championship before it was postponed and recorded another four at this past summer’s rescheduled tournament, giving him eight. He got his ninth in Canada’s 5-2 loss to Czechia to open the 2023 tournament before reaching 14 in Canada’s two latest games.

“We’re really happy for him. That’s such an accomplishment, it’s so cool. He’s been playing great this tournament. I don’t think anybody in the room is feeling anything but joy for him now,” said Adam Fantilli of his teammate.

Bedard has 27 points in his World Juniors career, four back of Eric Lindros' Canadian record of 31 from 1990 to 1992.

While the Canadians flexed their muscles in every aspect of Thursday's round-robin matchup, it did take them some time to get going. Williams' squad managed no shots on net through the opening 12 minutes, but Dylan Guenther got the tournament hosts on the board with a power-play goal off a nifty between-the-legs feed from Brennan Othmann. Just under two minutes later, Zach Dean fired a shot from the high slot that got through Austria netminder Benedikt Oschgan to double Canada’s lead.

Shane Wright then scored Canada's third goal to push their lead to 3-0 after the first 20 minutes.

Canada picked up right where they left off in the second as Joshua Roy tucked one home to make it a four-goal lead. Less than a minute later, Bedard beat Oschgan with a picture-perfect wrist shot from an odd angle for his first of the night and maybe his best of the tournament thus far.

Chicago Blackhawks prospect and defenceman Nolan Allen got his first goal of the tournament soon after and Logan Stankoven added another as Canada continued to build on the lead and finished the second frame up 7-0.

Fantilli scored his first of the tournament while Quebec Ramparts centre Nathan Gaucher, Anaheim Ducks prospect Tyson Hinds and Bedard all added goals in the final frame as Canada padded their lead.

Fantilli, also expected to be a high pick in next summer's draft, said he was pleased to get one on the board.

“I was just happy to get that first one. The first power play has been buzzing so much that we didn’t really get a chance to get out there but we got out there and I’m glad we capitalized. Try to keep it rolling into Sweden," the University of Michigan product said.

Ben Gaudreau got the start in net for Canada, his first action since being yanked and replaced by Thomas Milic in Canada’s first game of the tournament. He stopped all 12 shots he faced Thursday.

Canada has nine first-round picks and three NHL players on their roster while Austria entered Thursday’s matchup having lost both its games by a combined 20 goals.

The Canadians sit third in Group A with six points, trailing Sweden (eight) and Czechia (seven). Canada dropped their opening-game of the tournament to the Czechs on Boxing Day, the first time they’ve lost their opener with the tournament on home soil.

They rebounded in a big way on Wednesday, hammering Germany behind hat tricks from Bedard and Guenther. Bedard also had four assists, matching the Canadian single-game points record of seven also held by Dave Andreychuk (1983), Brenden Morrow (1999), Mike Cammalleri (2002) and Gabriel Bourque (2010).

Next up for Canada is Sweden on New Year’s Eve to conclude round-robin play. The top three teams in each group will advance to the medal round. Finland (seven points), USA (six) and Switzerland (four) are the current top three teams in Group B.

Canada has a day off Friday and Williams said his team is looking forward to getting a break after games on back-to-back days.

"The guys are looking forward to a break. We won't do much video tomorrow, just get a mental day away and try to get them ready for the next game."

Brazilian soccer legend Pelé, winner of record 3 World Cups, dead at 82 - CBC Sports

Pele, the Brazilian king of soccer who won a record three World Cups and became one of the most commanding sports figures of the last century, died Thursday. He was 82.

The standard-bearer of "the beautiful game" had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021. The medical centre where he had been hospitalized for the last month said he died of multiple organ failure as a result of the cancer.

"Pele changed everything. He transformed football into art, entertainment," Neymar, a fellow Brazilian soccer star, said on Instagram. "Football and Brazil elevated their standing thanks to the King! He is gone, but his magic will endure. Pele is eternal!"

A funeral was planned for Monday and Tuesday, with his casket to be carried through the streets of Santos, the coastal city where his storied career began, before burial.

Widely regarded as one of soccer's greatest players, Pele spent nearly two decades enchanting fans and dazzling opponents as the game's most prolific scorer with Brazilian club Santos and the Brazil national team.

His grace, athleticism and mesmerizing moves transfixed players and fans. He orchestrated a fast, fluid style that revolutionized the sport — a samba-like flair that personified his country's elegance on the field.

Soccer superstar Pelé, who led Brazil to its first World Cup at the age of 17, has died at 82. After a superlative career that saw him win two more World Cups and revolutionize the men's game, Pelé became a politician, successful businessman and a UNESCO ambassador at the UN.

He carried Brazil to soccer's heights and became a global ambassador for his sport in a journey that began on the streets of Sao Paulo state, where he would kick a sock stuffed with newspapers or rags.

In the conversation about soccer's greatest players, only the late Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are mentioned alongside Pele.

Different sources, counting different sets of games, list Pele's goal totals anywhere between 650 (league matches) and 1,281 (all senior matches, some against low-level competition.)

The player who would be dubbed "The King" was introduced to the world at 17 at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, the youngest player ever at the tournament. He was carried off the field on teammates' shoulders after scoring two goals in Brazil's 5-2 victory over the host country in the final.

Injury limited him to just two games when Brazil retained the world title in 1962, but Pele was the emblem of his country's World Cup triumph of 1970 in Mexico. He scored in the final and set up Carlos Alberto with a nonchalant pass for the last goal in a 4-1 victory over Italy.

The image of Pele in a bright, yellow Brazil jersey, with the No. 10 stamped on the back, remains alive with soccer fans everywhere. As does his trademark goal celebration — a leap with a right fist thrust high above his head.

Pele's fame was such that in 1967 factions of a civil war in Nigeria agreed to a brief cease-fire so he could play an exhibition match in the country. He was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. When he visited Washington to help popularize the game in North America, it was the U.S. president who stuck out his hand first.

"My name is Ronald Reagan, I'm the president of the United States of America," the host said to his visitor. "But you don't need to introduce yourself because everyone knows who Pele is."

Pele was Brazil's first modern Black national hero but rarely spoke about racism in a country where the rich and powerful tend to hail from the white minority.

Opposing fans taunted Pele with monkey chants at home and all over the world.

"He said that he would never play if he had to stop every time he heard those chants," said Angelica Basthi, one of Pele's biographers. "He is key for Black people's pride in Brazil, but never wanted to be a flagbearer."

Eclectic post-soccer life

Pele's life after soccer took many forms. He was a politician — Brazil's Extraordinary Minister for Sport — a wealthy businessman, and an ambassador for UNESCO and the United Nations.

He had roles in movies, soap operas and even composed songs and recorded CDs of popular Brazilian music.

As his health deteriorated, his travels and appearances became less frequent. He was often seen in a wheelchair during his final years and did not attend a ceremony to unveil a statue of him representing Brazil's 1970 World Cup team. Pele spent his 80th birthday isolated with a few family members at a beach home.

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, in the small city of Tres Coracoes in the interior of Minas Gerais state on Oct. 23, 1940, Pele grew up shining shoes to buy his modest soccer gear.

Pele's talent drew attention when he was 11, and a local professional player brought him to Santos' youth squads. It didn't take long for him to make it to the senior squad.

Despite his youth and 5-foot-8 frame, he scored against grown men with the same ease he displayed against friends back home. He debuted with the Brazilian club at 16 in 1956, and the club quickly gained worldwide recognition.

He went to the 1958 World Cup as a reserve but became a key player for his country's championship team. His first goal, in which he flicked the ball over the head of a defender and raced around him to volley it home, was voted as one of the best in World Cup history.

The 1966 World Cup in England — won by the hosts — was a bitter one for Pele, by then already considered the world's top player. Brazil was knocked out in the group stage and Pele, angry at the rough treatment, swore it was his last World Cup.

He changed his mind and was rejuvenated in the 1970 World Cup. In a game against England, he struck a header for a certain score, but the great goalkeeper Gordon Banks flipped the ball over the bar in an astonishing move. Pele likened the save — one of the best in World Cup history — to a "salmon climbing up a waterfall." Later, he scored the opening goal in the final against Italy, his last World Cup match.

Record 95 national-team goals

In all, Pele played 114 matches with Brazil, scoring a record 95 goals, including 77 in official matches.

His run with Santos stretched over three decades until he went into semi-retirement after the 1972 season. Wealthy European clubs tried to sign him, but the Brazilian government intervened to keep him from being sold, declaring him a national treasure.

On the field, Pele's energy, vision and imagination drove a gifted Brazilian national team with a fast, fluid style of play that exemplified "O Jogo Bonito" — Portuguese for "The Beautiful Game." His 1977 autobiography, "My Life and the Beautiful Game," made the phrase part of soccer's lexicon.

In 1975, he joined the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Although 34 and past his prime, Pele gave soccer a higher profile in North America. He led the Cosmos to the 1977 league title and scored 64 goals in three seasons.

Pele ended his career on Oct. 1, 1977, in an exhibition between the Cosmos and Santos before a crowd in New Jersey of some 77,000. He played half the game with each club. Among the dignitaries on hand was perhaps the only other athlete whose renown spanned the globe — Muhammad Ali.

Pele would endure difficult times in his personal life, especially when his son Edinho was arrested on drug-related charges. Pele had two daughters out of wedlock and five children from his first two marriages, to Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi and Assiria Seixas Lemos. He later married businesswoman Marcia Cibele Aoki.

The standard-bearer of "the beautiful game" had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021. The medical center where he had been hospitalized for the last month said he died of multiple organ failure as a result of the cancer.

"All that we are is thanks to you," his daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram. "We love you endlessly. Rest in peace."

His agent, Joe Fraga, confirmed his death: "The king has passed."

Widely regarded as one of soccer's greatest players, Pelé spent nearly two decades enchanting fans and dazzling opponents as the game's most prolific scorer with Brazilian club Santos and the Brazil national team.

Pelé likened the save — one of the best in World Cup history — to a "salmon climbing up a waterfall." Later, he scored the opening goal in the final against Italy, his last World Cup match.

Record 95 national-team goals

In all, Pelé played 114 matches with Brazil, scoring a record 95 goals, including 77 in official matches.

His run with Santos stretched over three decades until he went into semi-retirement after the 1972 season. Wealthy European clubs tried to sign him, but the Brazilian government intervened to keep him from being sold, declaring him a national treasure.

On the field, Pelé's energy, vision and imagination drove a gifted Brazilian national team with a fast, fluid style of play that exemplified "O Jogo Bonito" — Portuguese for "The Beautiful Game." His 1977 autobiography, My Life and the Beautiful Game, made the phrase part of soccer's lexicon.

In 1975, he joined the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Although 34 and past his prime, Pelé gave soccer a higher profile in North America. He led the Cosmos to the 1977 league title and scored 64 goals in three seasons.

Pelé ended his career on Oct. 1, 1977, in an exhibition between the Cosmos and Santos before a crowd in New Jersey of some 77,000. He played half the game with each club. Among the dignitaries on hand was perhaps the only other athlete whose renown spanned the globe — Muhammad Ali.

Pelé would endure difficult times in his personal life, especially when his son Edinho was arrested on drug-related charges. Pelé had two daughters out of wedlock and five children from his first two marriages, to Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi and Assiria Seixas Lemos. He later married businesswoman Marcia Cibele Aoki.

WJC Scouting Report: Connor Bedard’s generational talent stands out - Sportsnet.ca

Here are my scouting notes from Canada’s blowout 11-2 win over Germany at the WJC:

1. Canada likely didn’t need a break tonight with the way they prepared and executed their game plan, but they were provided with one as Germany was without their starting goalie Nikita Quapp.

2. Perspective is everything at times. Canada made some adjustments and the team looked more balanced tonight. Germany, on the other hand, looked tired and out of sorts compared to yesterday versus Sweden. The moral of the story is Canada wasn’t ready in Game 1 against Czechia, and Germany emptied the tank against Sweden yesterday.

3. Connor Bedard is a generational talent. He was my player of the game for Canada versus Czechia (the voting media felt otherwise and awarded it to Shane Wright). There isn’t a player in this draft class who does what Bedard does. This space isn’t big enough for me to share the entirety of his skill set. He changes gears in open ice and is an elite shooter from the half wall on the power play. He makes plays through seams – looking opponents off like a basketball player makes a no-look pass in transition – that lead to open net goals for his linemates.

Team Canada has Dylan Guenther and Shane Wright on their team and they have both been playing in the NHL to date. Bedard, at 17, is a better player than both of them already. He ended the game with a smooth seven points (three goals, four assists).

[brightcove videoID=6317954559112 playerID=JCdte3tMv height=360 width=640]

4. Logan Stankoven playing the middle with Bedard and Joshua Roy is an excellent decision by the Team Canada coaching staff. Stankoven stirs the drink. So does Roy. This line is a mix of skill and will.

5. Zack Ostapchuk (Ottawa Senators draft pick, 2021) provided quality minutes in a defined role against Germany. He was heavy on the forecheck as F1 and took some key face-offs on his backhand side. He’s a big body who played with power tonight.

6. Zach Dean was much better than in the opener. I appreciate his energy and pace. He can provide havoc tracking opponents and he’s quick to take away time and space on the PK

7. Canada scored 7 power play goals

8. Back to Josh Roy for a moment. He’s going to play a big part in any success the Canadians have the rest of the way. He can play up and down the lineup in scoring or checking roles.

9. Guenther is an elite shooter. Before arriving at this tournament all three of his NHL goals were scored with the man advantage. When he gets pucks in his wheelhouse his one-timer is lethal at any level.

Takeaways

The game wasn’t without some concerns for Canada. Thomas Milic allowed two goals that I felt he could have stopped. The good news is he got his feet wet as a starter for Team Canada. But I wasn’t entirely comfortable with his crease composure and felt he was dropping too soon on pucks from the perimeter. He will be tested more as the tournament progresses. Hopefully he got some of the jitters out of the way tonight.

The D-core played to more of an identity. They were more organized and defined. Nolan Allan, Jack Matier and Ethan Del Mastro looked like the shut down group while Brandt Clarke, Olen Zellweger, and Kevin Korchinski are providing more offensive elements. Tyson Hinds is plenty capable of skating in a variety of roles.

Better Details

In a blowout game it’s difficult to focus on the details, but Canada did a nice job and delivered three zones of responsible play tonight. They used their speed and skill in straight lines. They tracked back the full 200 feet, supporting each other as a five-man unit. The game is easier when you can count on your teammates to play with structure.

Conclusion

Perspective is everything at times (he said again!). This wasn’t a top flight opponent Canada played, but the team needed to define itself up and down the lineup did just that. Austria is up next on Thursday.

Bedard shines as Canada demolishes Germany to bounce back at world juniors - CBC Sports

Canada needed a response after a miserable 48 hours.

Connor Bedard — as he's done so often in his young career — delivered with lethal precision.

The 17-year-old phenom had a hat trick and four assists Wednesday as the host county got back on track at the world junior hockey championship with an emphatic 11-2 victory over Germany.

"Unbelievable game," Canadian captain Shane Wright said. "Pretty crazy what he's doing out there. Special night."

It certainly was.

Bedard's seven-point performance tied a single-game Canadian record on a night the favourites at the men's under-20 showcase needed a response following Monday's embarrassing 5-2 loss to Czechia.

"It's cool," the presumptive No. 1 pick at the 2023 NHL draft said of joining Dave Andreychuk (1983), Brenden Morrow (1999), Mike Cammalleri (2002) and Gabriel Bourque (2010) on Canada's seven-point list. "But that's not a huge deal for me. It's good to get the win.

"I got a couple of pretty lucky ones. Just one of those nights."

Connor Bedard leads Canada past Germany at the World Junior Championship

Duration 1:03

Projected number 1 draft pick, Connor Bedard scores 3 goals and has 4 assists leading Canada to an 11-2 victory over Team Germany at the World Junior Championship.

Bedard now has 12 goals all-time at the world juniors, two back of Jordan Eberle's national record.

"I'll text him saying he's got a guy on his heels," Wright said of Eberle, his teammate with the NHL's Seattle Kraken. "Don't think we'll be focused on that a lot, but it's gonna be special if he hits those along the way."

"He was on fire ... shot was unreal," Canadian head coach Dennis Williams added of Bedard. "His creativity and his poise ... a great night.

"He led the way."

Dylan Guenther also had a hat trick — all off Bedard passes — while Logan Stankoven added a goal and two assists.

Wright, Brandt Clarke and Joshua Roy, with a goal and an assist each, and Zack Ostapchuk also scored.

Olen Zellweger chipped in with three assists as Williams shook up three of his forward lines — including splitting up Bedard and Wright — after a disconnected and disjointed effort against the Czechs.

"We came much more determined," said the coach. "Played tighter as a group."

Thomas Milic made 14 saves in his first world junior start for Canada. Roman Kechter and Philip Sinn replied for Germany, which got 30 stops from Simon Wolf before he was replaced by Rihards Babulis for the third period in a mercy pull. Babulis finished with 11 saves.

"We were pretty hungry," Bedard said. "That was a huge way to come back."

Austria up next

Canada, which improved to 16-0 all-time against the Germans, will now quickly pivot to face Austria — outscored 20-0 through its two tournament games — Thursday back at Scotiabank Centre.

Coming off a 1-0 defeat Tuesday to Sweden, Germany is off Thursday before a Friday meeting with Austria.

A talent-rich team loaded with nine first-round NHL draft picks, plus Bedard and fellow high-end prospect Adam Fantilli, Canada was stunned by the Czechs in an uninspired curtain-raiser that left the powerhouse nation searching for answers.

That included players questioning their own readiness and preparation, while Fantilli and Bedard each attempted and failed "The Michigan" lacrosse-style move early — sequences viewed afterwards as symptomatic of the Canadians' loose approach against an underdog opponent.

There would be no repeat.

"We didn't change our game based on what the score was," Guenther said. "I love that ... that was awesome."

The Arizona Coyotes forward opened things on a power play in the first period off a Bedard feed before when Ketcher snapped a shot through Milic.

Wright was credited with his second goal of the tournament on another man advantage when a German defender swept the puck into his own net.

Bedard, who had four goals in an 11-2 victory over Austria one year ago to the day before that tournament was shelved by COVID-19, made it 3-1 when he took a stretch pass and ripped a shot past Wolf, and got another early in the second on a goaltending miscue.

"We were a lot more focused," Wright said. "We knew we had to respond after last game's effort."

Wright said Bedard could probably put up a couple points a night in the NHL right now.

"Incredible," said the No. 4 pick at the 2022 draft. "Haven't seen many individual performances like that. Pretty special."

Added Guenther: "He's gonna be an impact player there, I assume, right away."

Bedard roofed his hat trick goal on another power play through a screen before Rayan Bettahar was assessed a match penalty and ejected for an illegal check to the head on Fantilli.

A Canadian hockey player is seen being hit in the face by a German player. The Canadian's face is titled back due to the contact and both his skates aren't in contact with the ice as he's in falling down.
Canada’s Adam Fantilli, centre, is hit by Germany’s Rayan Bettahar during the second period in Halifax on Wednesday. (Darren Calabrese/The Canadian Press)

That's when the floodgates really opened.

Guenther scored his second on a slick Bedard feed to make it 6-1 and Clarke blasted a one-timer off a German defender.

Bedard then set up Guenther for his third on the same man advantage and Stankoven added another late in the period for a 9-1 lead through 40 minutes.

Ostapchuk made it 10-1 early in the third before Bedard assisted on Roy's goal for his seventh point of the evening.

Sinn got a late consolation goal on a German power play to close out a night that saw Canada recalibrate after an uncomfortable two days.

"That's how we play hockey," Wright said. "All three periods — all 60 minutes — that was Team Canada hockey. We were expecting a bounce-back game and that's exactly we got.

"Really proud of our effort."

10 convicted in attempted murder of David Ortiz - CTV News

A Dominican court convicted 10 people involved in the 2019 attempted killing of baseball Hall of Famer David Ortiz, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Ortiz, a Dominican native, was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at close range while the former Red Sox slugger was at a bar with friends in a well-off neighborhood of Santo Domingo

Two men, including the alleged shooter Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz, were each sentenced to 30 years in prison by Santo Domingo's First Collegiate Court.

Eight others received prison sentences of between five and 20 years. Three other defendants were acquitted due to insufficient evidence, including Victor Hugo Gomez Vasquez, who was accused of planning the attack.

American private investigators hired by Ortiz said that the slugger affectionately known as Big Papi was targeted by a Dominican drug trafficker who was jealous of him.

The findings by former Boston police commissioner Edward Davis contradicted a previous theory by law enforcement in the Dominican Republic that the hitman was actually hired to shoot Ortiz's cousin Sixto David Fernandez, who was sitting at the same table.

Dominican authorities said the hitmen confused Fernandez with Ortiz, one of the country's most beloved ballplayers.

A fearsome power hitter with a ready smile, Ortiz led the Red Sox to three World Series championships, was a 10-time All-Star and hit 541 home runs before retiring in 2016. When he was shot, he was living part of the year in the Dominican Republic.

Ortiz was seriously wounded in the June 2019 shooting. Doctors in the Dominican Republic removed Ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestine after the shooting and he underwent further surgery in the U.S.

Among the crimes for which the 10 men were sentenced were criminal organization, use of illegal firearms, attempted murder, and complicity, the court wrote in a statement.

Authorities noted that more details of the sentencing will be released on Feb. 8, 2023.

World Juniors: Canada needs to 'respect opponent a little more' - Yahoo Canada Sports

Canada suffered a shocking defeat in its opening game at the World Juniors. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darren Calabrese)

If Canada was expecting to rest on its laurels and cruise to the medal round at this year's world junior championship, the team was given a major wake-up call in its opening match.

Canada was thumped 5-2 by Czechia in its first game on Monday, leaving it in desperate need of a bounce-back effort against Germany on Wednesday in Halifax.

Canadian captain Shane Wright didn't overreact to the one-game sample size, but knows his team needs to be more dialled in from the opening faceoff moving forward.

"We've got to learn from this, got to move on from it. The gold medal is not won tonight," Wright said after the loss to Czechia. "We've got to respect our opponent a little more. We've got to make sure that we come in every single game ready to fight. We're going to get every team's best and every team wants to beat Canada."

Dylan Guenther, who along with Wright and Brandt Clarke is one of three NHLers loaned to Canada for the tournament, expressed the importance of simplifying the game instead of trying to fill the highlight reel. Canada attempted "The Michigan" twice against Czechia to no avail.

"We're not going to 'Michigan' our way to the final," Guenther said Tuesday. "We're trying it a lot. It's a skilled play. I get it. But I think that's kind of how our game's going right now. We're trying to skill our way through it. We're trying to toe-drag, beat guys one-on-one."

"You have to play the right way. Play together and play as a team. It starts with the simple side of the game — winning battles. Our skill ... there's no problem. It's the compete level."

Canada should be able to rebound for its first win of the tournament against Germany, but can't afford to take another opponent lightly. The Germans held Sweden to one goal in a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday after the Swedes routed Austria 11-0 on Monday.

Thomas Milic will start in goal for Canada. The Seattle Thunderbirds netminder stopped all 10 shots he faced against Czechia in relief of Benjamin Gaudreau, who was pulled after giving up five goals on 17 shots.

World Junior Championship Team Canada Thomas Milic to start - TSN

Thomas Milic is scheduled to start in net for Team Canada when they play their second game of the World Junior Championship tournament on Wednesday against Germany, head coach Dennis Williams announced.

Team Canada did not skate Tuesday, but Williams said there are other lineup changes planned after seeing the team lose their opening game of the tournament.

Benjamin Gaudreau started for Canada against Czechia on Monday, and made just 12 saves of the 17 shots he faced. He was pulled from the game after allowing the fifth goal just before halfway through the second period.

Canada went on to lose the game 5-2, but Milic saved all 10 shots he saw in relief of Gaudreau, including holding the door shut against two powerplays for the Czech side.

Williams was disappointed with the opening effort for a Canada squad that features three players with NHL experience and a bevy of top 2023 NHL Draft prospects.

"Our discipline wasn't great and a lot of guys played an individual game. So that's something we got to address. And we've got a day to prep here," said Williams after the game against Czechia.

Canada has three more games of Round Robin action to right the ship, the first of which will be played against Germany on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 6:30pm EST / 3:30pm PST. You can watch the game LIVE on TSN1/4/5, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

World Junior Championship roundup: Svozil, Czechia stun Canada - NHL.com

Day 1 games

Czechia 5, Canada 2 -- Jaroslav Chmelar (New York Rangers) and Matous Mensik (2023 draft eligible) scored power-play goals 33 seconds apart in the second period to break the game open in a Group A game at Scotiabank Centre.

It was Czechia's second victory against Canada, and first regulation, in 24 games at the World Juniors, including a 5-4 shootout win at the 2014 tournament.

David Spacek (Minnesota Wild) and Stanislav Svozil (Columbus Blue Jackets) each had a goal and an assist for Czechia. Tomas Suchanek (2023 draft eligible) made 36 saves and had an assist.

"It's unreal," Svozil said. "This was just the first game of the tournament, and we knew we had to win two games to qualify [for the playoffs], so this is nice. When we got that fifth goal and they had only two, we felt we were in control."

Shane Wright (Seattle Kraken) and Connor Bedard, the projected No. 1 pick of the 2023 Upper Deck NHL Draft, scored for Canada. Benjamin Gaudreau (San Jose Sharks) allowed five goals on 16 shots before being replaced in the second period by Thomas Milic (2023 draft eligible), who made 11 saves.

It's the first time Canada has lost its first game at the World Juniors since a 6-4 loss to the United States in 2016.

"They outworked us," Canada forward Brennan Othmann (New York Rangers) said. "You can't take any team lightly. They had a good game, so credit to them. It's a learning curve. They say you win or you learn, and tonight it was learning.

"Obviously, there's a lot of hype about our team, but at the same time, you want to win especially with this amazing crowd. Now we have to bounce back in two days. It doesn't hurt to go through a game like this. Every team does. It's good for us and a little bit humbling."

Canada got within 3-2 on Bedard's goal at 1:29 of the second period, but forward Zach Dean (Vegas Golden Knights) was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for an illegal check to the head at 4:21.

On the ensuing power play, Chmelar banged in a loose puck in the crease to make it 4-2 at 8:14, and then Mensik skated down the left side and found space between Gaudreau's blocker and the post to make it 5-2 at 8:47.

Wright scored on a power play to give Canada a 1-0 lead at 10:33 of the first period.

Spacek dropped down and scored backdoor after receiving a pass from Svozil to tie it 1-1 at 17:48, and then David Moravec, who plays for Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, put Czechia up 2-1 at 18:23.

Szovil extended it to 3-1 with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle 44 seconds into the second.

Czechia next plays Austria on Tuesday (6:30 p.m. ET). Canada plays Germany on Wednesday (6:30 p.m. ET).

United States 5, Latvia 2 -- Sean Behrens (Colorado Avalanche) and Redmond Savage (Detroit Red Wings) each had a goal and an assist in a Group B game at Avenir Centre.

Jimmy Snuggerud (St. Louis Blues), Chaz Lucius (Winnipeg Jets) and Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils) each scored, and Trey Augustine (2023 draft eligible) made 15 saves.

Anri Ravinskis (2023 draft eligible) and Niks Fenenko (2023 draft eligible) scored for Latvia. Patricks Berzins (2023 draft eligible) made 41 saves.

The U.S. broke the game open with three goals in the third period.

"We just settled down for the third and kind of played with more character," U.S. coach Rand Pecknold said. "I thought in the first two periods we were nervous and made a couple of mistakes that ended up in the back of the net. But we had plenty of chances, so we just talked about letting our character come through in the third."

Lucius skated down the slot and beat Berzins with a backhand to make it 3-2 at 1:57.

Savage extended it to 4-2 at 6:48 when he scored on the rebound of a shot by Dylan Duke (Tampa Bay Lightning).

Hughes, the U.S. captain, scored from the point to make it 5-2 at 13:29.

Snuggerud gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead 24 seconds into the second period when he knocked in a loose puck in the crease.

Ravinskis tied it at 4:59, finishing a give-and-go with Rainers Rullers (2023 draft eligible).

Behrens gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead at 9:17 when he one-timed a pass to the point by Savage.

Latvia tied the game on Fenenko's goal at 14:24 through a screen.

"We're not proud because we lost, but we gave them a good battle," Ravinskis said. "So it was a good game. We made some mistakes, especially the third period wasn't the best one. But still, we're going to keep our heads up and prepare for the next game. "

Belarus hands former Olympic medallist Herasimenia prison term in absentia - CBC Sports

Belarusian authorities on Monday handed lengthy prison terms to two opposition activists who had fled the country, in the first court verdict against dissidents that was announced in absentia.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia and Alexander Opeikin were each sentenced to 12 years in prison. A court in Minsk convicted the two on charges of calling for sanctions and inflicting harm on the national security of Belarus.

Herasimenia, a former swimmer and three-time Olympic medallist, and Opeikin founded the Belarusian Sport Solidarity Foundation, which united hundreds of Belarusian athletes critical of President Alexander Lukahsenko's authoritarian rule.

Belarus was shaken by major protests after the disputed August 2020 re-election of Lukashenko, which the opposition and the West denounced as a sham. Authorities responded to the demonstrations with a crackdown that saw more than 35,000 people arrested and thousands beaten by police. It was followed by an array of crippling Western sanctions.

The foundation created by Herasimenia and Opeikin contributed to cancelling the biggest international tournaments in Belarus in 2021, including the European Track Championships, the Ice Hockey World Championship and World Modern Pentathlon Championships — a humiliation for Lukahsenko, who loves sports and is a proud hockey player.

Belarusian authorities accused the two activists of undermining Belarus's national security. The trial was held behind closed doors and without the accused present in accordance with a new law Lukahsenko signed in July, which allowed courts to try Belarusians who had fled abroad in absentia.

In addition to handing Herasimenia a prison term, the court also ruled to seize her apartment, her car and $48,000 US in her bank accounts.

According to Belarus's most prominent human rights group, Viasna, 1,439 political prisoners are currently behind bars in Belarus.

Opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who also faces prosecution and lives in exile in Lithuania, condemned the sentences handed to Herasimenia and Opeikin on Monday.

"Shameful!.. This is how the regime tries to punish its opponents in exile," Tsikhanouskaya tweeted. "The regime can't get to them, but their property in Belarus was seized, including a car [and] an apartment."
