Pogba breaks silence after four-year doping ban - Football Italia

A ‘heartbroken’ Paul Pogba has broken silence after a four-year doping ban was confirmed on Thursday: ‘I would never do anything to enhance my performance’ and ‘I will appeal this before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.’.

Pogba reacted to a four-year ban from the Italian anti-doping tribunal with an official statement published on his official Instagram account on Thursday.

“I have today been informed of the Tribunale Nazionale Antidoping’s decision and believe that the verdict is incorrect,” he said.

“I am sad, shocked and heartbroken that everything I have built in my professional playing career has been taken away from me.

“When I am free of legal restrictions the full story will become clear, but I have never knowingly or deliberately taken any supplements that violate anti-doping regulations.

“As a professional athlete I would never do anything to enhance my performance by using banned substances and have never disrespected or cheated fellow athletes and supporters of any of the teams I have played for, or against.

“As a consequence of the decision announced today I will appeal this before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

Pogba failed a doping test on August 20, 2023, after an away Serie A game at Udinese, which he had entirely spent on the bench.

DHEA, which can raise the level of testosterone, was found in Pogba’s body and a second sample also tested positive in October.

Pogba had been precautionarily suspended by the anti-doping prosecutor in September 2023 and, consequently by Juventus as well. This means Pogba hasn’t trained with the rest of his teammates for five months, receiving €2,400 per month, the minimum fee provided by the collective agreement between clubs and the Footballers’ Association for a player suspended for doping.

On paper, Juventus can already terminate his contract, but will first talk to the player’s entourage and may not take any decision until June.

The Serie A giants are not expected to release a statement today.

Flames trade Chris Tanev to Stars for Artem Grushnikov, 2024 second-round pick, 2026 conditional third-round pick - The Athletic

By Pierre LeBrun, Chris Johnston, Saad Yousuf and Julian McKenzie

The Calgary Flames traded veteran defenseman Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars for a 2024 second-round pick, a conditional 2026 third-round pick and prospect Artem Grushnikov, the teams announced. The Flames are retaining 50 percent of Tanev’s cap hit and salary. Calgary only receives Dallas’ 2026 third-round pick if the Stars advance to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. If that doesn’t happen, no conditional pick will be transferred.

The Stars also sent their 2026 fourth-round pick to the New Jersey Devils. The Devils retained 50 percent of Tanev’s 2023-24 salary.

Tanev was in high demand as an effective shutdown defender and is the No. 2 player on The Athletic’s latest trade board.

Stars general manager Jim Nill has struck some shrewd deals through the years but this has the potential to be right at the top of the list. It wasn’t hard for anybody around the NHL to see that the Stars had a dire situation on the blue line, especially exposed with recent injuries to Jani Hakanpää and Nils Lundkvist. That should have given teams leverage and try to pry one of the Stars’ top three prospects in Logan Stankoven (recently elevated to the NHL), Mavrik Bourque and Lian Bichsel.

The Stars have held firm that none of those three prospects were on the table in trade discussions, especially not for a rental. For Nill to get one of the top right-shot defensemen on the market without giving up a top prospect or a first-round pick is an instant win. To get 50 percent salary retention with how tight the Stars are against the cap makes it even sweeter for Dallas, who gets to hold on to their existing blueline group for additional depth.

NHL trade grades: Adding Chris Tanev is a slam dunk win for the Stars

The Flames will miss Tanev with this trade. At 34, Tanev proved to be a reliable defensive defenseman while allowing Noah Hanifin to show off his offensive gifts. His quiet, yet humorous personality in the Flames locker room endeared him to many teammates. With his pending UFA status in the air and a retool on the horizon, Tanev had to be dealt ahead of last week’s deadline. The argument could be made that if the Flames waited longer, the return for Tanev could’ve been different. But what if he got hurt?

Tanev’s playing style likely played a role in why this trade happened now and not next week. Tanev has no problem sacrificing his body for the good of the team, and will play through anything. While the risk of injury is out there for any player — and Tanev has proven to be mostly durable during his Flames tenure — Tanev’s play style was cause for more concern than most.

Tanev’s addition instantly gives the Stars options in the lineup for combinations. They can choose to put Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley together at the top, a pairing that has been incredibly productive for the Stars. They could also explore pairing one of those natural lefties with Tanev and pairing the other with another player to elevate a second pairing. Dallas coach Pete DeBoer will have options to explore leading into the postseason.

With no GMs out there handing out a first-round pick for Tanev, this appeared to be the best move Flames GM Craig Conroy could make. The Flames get a second-round pick in this year’s draft, giving the Flames four picks between the first two rounds. The Flames will also get a 2026 conditional third, but only if the Stars go through to the Stanley Cup Final this year, and a project prospect in 20-year-old Grushnikov.

What is also fascinating is the Flames’ retention of salary on Tanev, it’s not something that typically happens with this franchise in their history through trades. But the Flames may have been more comfortable doing so on an expiring contract compared to one with more terms.

Yousuf: Chris Tanev trade puts the Stars in prime position to chase the Stanley Cup

On the surface, it’s a modest return considering what the expectation was. Unless Grushnikov excels at the AHL level and emerges in the next few years, the prize of this deal is the 2024 second-rounder.

Tanev signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks in May 2010 and spent 10 seasons with the Canucks before signing a four-year, $18 million contract with the Flames in 2020.

Tanev notched 14 points with the Flames this season. He has one goal and 13 assists through 56 games played in 2023-24.

Edmonton Oilers shrug off slow start to beat Blues 3-2 in OT - Edmonton Journal

Article content

The Edmonton Oilers slept through the alarm Wednesday night…

But luckily, they woke up in time to erase a 2-nothing deficit and ultimately beat St. Louis 3-2 in Overtime.

Article content

After Jordan Binnington stymied the Oilers a few games back, on this night Stuart Skinner was the best goalie on the ice, slamming the door shut for the final 55 minutes of regulation and deep into Overtime.

Along the way Zach Hyman scored his 40th of the season and Connor McDavid snapped a 10-game goal drought.

Here is the tale of the tape…

Edmonton Oilers Player Grades

STUART SKINNER. 8. The shooter was allowed to walk in from the point unadulterated on the 1-0. Skinner was also at least partially screened and the shot by Thomas was perfect. On the 2-0, it was a bang-bang play from behind the goal line into the high slot. So, impossible to blame Skinner on either. 2nd Period saves on Toropchenko and Parayko in the 2nd to keep the score even. A spectacular blocker save off Bolduc on a breakaway in the 3rd to preserve the 2-2 score. Shot out a toe to stop Thomas late in the 3rd. Great in overtime too, with stops on Saad and Neighbours. Stu Skinner was the better goaltender on the night. Stopped 32 of 34 for a well-earned Win. Not sure they would have without him.

CONNOR McDAVID. 8. His man was the shooter on the 2-0. But McDavid did not look back after that. Deked out one player but could not beat Binnington after a terrific set-up by Draisaitl. Funneled a perfect pass into the slow slot for Hyman on the 2-1. Then, a give & go with Hyman resulted in the 2-2. Connor then won the game in Overtime. He rushed an Ekholm feed into the St. Louis zone. He then pranced around both Thomas and Kyrou on the rush and wristed a shot off Binnington’s shoulder and in. A 3-point night. Breaks the 10-game goal-less drought. 71% on draws. Named the game’s 2nd Star.

LEON DRAISAITL. 5. An errant stick put the Blues on the PP 3 minutes into the game, and they did not waste the chance to make it 1-0. Tipped a Desharnais shot in the 1st, but Binnington made the stop. A terrific backhand pass to McDavid in the high slot for a chance. No assist but won the draw on the 2-1. A feed to Ceci for a shot late in the 1st. 2nd Period D-zone turnover. A spectacular end-to-end rush ended with a pass into the slot which Hyman deflected high. Found Nurse just stepping out of the penalty box for a great chance. Dumped along the wall early in the 3rd but no call. Fed Kulak who hit the post. S teal in the O-zone and then got the shot away at the end of that sequence. Set up Hyman in front who may have grazed the post. D-zone faceoff win late in the 3rd. Hard drive to the net in OT but Binnington managed his backhander. 3 shots, 3 hits. Considering how many plays he had a hand in, remarkable Leon did not register a point.

ZACH HYMAN. 9. Scored in his 6th straight with a PP goal in the 1st, potting the 2-1 by back handing his own rebound home from the top of the crease. A hard charge to the net off a terrific neutral zone play by Ekholm. Then, a nifty give & go with McDavid with Hyman lifting his 40th of the season just above Binnington’s outstretched pad. Nearly had the hat-trick with a chip in the slot after a marvelous end-to-end by McDavid. Looked to nick the post on a Draisaitl feed in the 3rd. Hyman was a force all night, just relentless. Named the game’s 1st Star.

DARNELL NURSE. 5. A very rough start to this one for a player who has been going through a rough patch. Partial screen on the 1-0. Then both Nurse and his partner ended up below the goal line on the 2-0. Bounced back with a fine rush later but could not find Ryan in the slot on an Oilers 2-on-1. Frankly unlucky on the over-the-glass penalty in the 2nd but his mates killed it off. Broke up a 2-on-1 with a gutsy play. Got a clear shot on goal at the end of that PK when Draisaitl found him with a great pass.

CODY CECI. 6. You could find Cody Ceci and Darnell Nurse below their own goal line when the puck went into the net for the 2-0. Brushed off the rough start with a steady performance the rest of the way. High Dangers 5v5 were 7-2 with Ceci on the ice.

RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS. 8. A nice pass over to Janmark in the 1st but the winger could not convert. Secondary assist on the 2-1 with a smart pass to McDavid. Smart clear on the 2nd Period PK. He, Kane, and Holloway produced a withering O-Zone shift late in the 1st against the Blues’ #1 line. Fine stick & clear on that 3rd Period PK. A flat-out terrific back-check, absolutely busting his ass to get back on one of the Blues’ best players (Thomas) to erase a would-be breakaway. That was perhaps the turning point of the game. Excellent board play deep in the Blues zone in OT. 2 Assists in one of the best two-way games an Oilers forward has had this season. Great game.

MATTIAS JANMARK. 5. Could not pull the trigger on a nice feed from Nugent-Hopkins in the 1st. Failed to clear a puck along the wall leading to a shot against. Took a chip pass from Brown and jammed the St. Louis net hard. Some particularly good PK work. But kind of beat the puck square.

EVANDER KANE. 6. Early 2nd Period wrap-around attempt on a solid opening shift from this trio. He, Nugent-Hopkins, and Holloway produced a terrific shift in the Blues zone to end the 2nd. Drew a hard high stick that should have been a double minor.

EVAN BOUCHARD. 6. Beat back into his own zone by a Blues player to erase an icing in the 1st, leading to a shot on goal. Point shot led to a dangerous tip in front by Hyman. Drew a penalty with a strong rush up-ice with the puck, then was part of the sequence on the 2-1 PP goal. Turned a patient play into his own zone to a thrilling up-the-gut pass to Hyman on the 2-2. A splendid stick broke up a 2-on-1. Called on a pretty cheap call that was well-embellished right at the buzzer. Double give-away late in the 3rd. Played 25:26. +2. High event, but on-balance “good”.

MATTIAS EKHOLM. 7. Excellent performance. Terrific neutral zone stick led to a Hyman chance. Hard play in front erased Neighbours threatening in the slot on the PP. Excellent stick on a 3rd Period PK. Settled the puck down in OT, and made the safe, smart play to McDavid who netted the winner. A veteran play by The Viking. 5v5 CF 21-13, 62%, High Dangers 6-1 on his watch.

RYAN McLEOD. 5. Nearly had the 2-1 on an excellent tip off a Desharnais point shot. Then a terrific play to feed Kulak for a dangerous shot. Dusted off a great pass from Foegele in front and it cost him a good chance. Nasty giveaway deep in his own zone late in the 2nd. 0 shots in 14:21, did not win a faceoff.

WARREN FOEGELE. 5. A hard forecheck followed by a pass out in front to McLeod on their 1st shift of the 2nd. 5 shots. Hustled. Good metrics.

COREY PERRY. 3. Struggled. 1st Period giveaway. Stripped of the puck and then a giveaway in the same shift. The puck was generally headed in the right direction on his watch, but in some ways those numbers are misleading.

BRETT KULAK. 7. His good stick interrupted a St. Louis 2-on-1 triggered by a Desharnais giveaway. Was jumping up effectively early, two 1st Period shots. Fired one off the post from a Draisaitl pass. 3 shots, 3 hits. 5v5 CF 23-12, 66%, High Dangers 5-2. On a very good run of play.

VINCENT DESHARNAIS. 5. 1st Period turnover led to a 2-on-1 against. A well-placed shot tipped by McDavid part way through the 1st. Did the same thing with McLeod a couple shifts later but Mcleod was foiled. Good play on the wall led to a short-handed chance at the other end.

Article content

DEREK RYAN. 4. His over-aggressiveness on the PK left the other St. Louis point uncovered on the 1-0 play. 0 shots. 57% on draws.

DYLAN HOLLOWAY. 6. Took a hit to clear the zone later in the 1st. Threw a puck in the slot which banked off Nugent-Hopkins and rattled around dangerously in the St. Louis crease. Almost batted home a Ceci rebound in the 2nd. Elevated up the lineup and rewarded his coach with a terrific O-zone shift late in the 2nd alongside Nugent-Hopkins and Kane. A lot of good wall work and strong stick plays. None of that looks fancy on the score sheet but it helps win games. 55v CF 20-12, 63%. 2 shots, 3 hits. What IS he doing on the 4th line?

CONNOR BROWN. 4. 1st Period giveaway at his own blueline. Hustled to beat an icing at the other end. Helped create a shorthanded chance early in the 3rd. 2 hits.

Edmonton’s record now sits at 35-20-2, 72 points. They remain 3rd in the Pacific Division. The Oilers are just 1 back of Vegas with 2 games in hand.

NHL trade grades: Adding Chris Tanev is a slam dunk win for the Stars - The Athletic

The trade

Dallas Stars get: Defenseman Chris Tanev, goalie Cole Brady

Calgary Flames get: Defenseman Artem Grushnikov, Stars’ 2024 second-round pick, conditional third-round pick in 2026.

New Jersey Devils get: Stars’ 2026 fourth-round pick for retaining 50 percent of Tanev’s salary.

Sean Gentille: Speaking in generalities, this didn’t sound like a bad deal for the Flames. Not initially, at least. Picks and a prospect? Sure. That’s the general price tag for a guy like Chris Tanev — accomplished, battle-tested, right-handed, older but not quite old and a pending UFA. That gets you something nice, if not something great.

Each bit of successive information, though, made the deal a little worse on the Calgary side. The best pick is in the second round? OK. The prospect isn’t Logan Stankoven or Mavrik Bourque. Hmm. Liking it less. The Flames are retaining 50 percent of Tanev’s salary? Now we’re in “definitive winner, definitive loser” territory.

It’s not a catastrophe for Flames GM Craig Conroy. It’s certainly a disappointment, though. Tanev isn’t just still good; he’s the type of player contenders get googly eyes over, for all those reasons we listed earlier. The fact that Conroy had to add a sweetener and still couldn’t snag a first-rounder or a better prospect is bizarre. Artem Grushnikov was 10th on Scott Wheeler’s Stars prospect ranking earlier this month and in the “has a chance” tier of Corey Pronman’s ahead of the season. He’s big and a good skater, Pronman says, with a limited offensive game.

Tanev’s injury history is lengthy, and the teams that could’ve used him most — like Vancouver and Toronto — probably weren’t Conroy’s preferred dance partners. All that needs to be considered. But accepting what feels like the bare minimum on a premium asset nine days before the deadline feels like a rookie mistake.

On the Stars side, it’s all love. GM Jim Nill had nearly no cap space available to address a glaring hole on the right side of his defense, and he parlayed it into the best option on the market. Involving an Eastern Conference team was an extra layer of creativity. If Tanev’s shoulder holds up, he’ll give them a perfect option to play behind Miro Heiskanen. Tanev is a shutdown defenseman who thrives on puck retrievals and plays major minutes. Whether he has taken a step back offensively or not is almost immaterial; the Stars get plenty of that elsewhere. They’re loading up for a Stanley Cup run, and they’re doing it the right way: With an OGWAC who can actually play.

Stars grade: A+
Flames grade: D

Shayna Goldman: This is an absolute slam dunk win for the Stars. Dallas had one clear need heading into the deadline: A steady, right-handed defenseman. That was true before the Nils Lundkvist injury. This was the one area where the team fell short when measuring them on the Stanley Cup Checklist; now with Tanev, he slots in as the team’s No. 3 which moves the rest of the blue line into more appropriate roles behind him.

With Thomas Harley on the top pair, the Stars’ defense is somewhat top-loaded. So this addition changes that — whether he slots behind that pair, and forms a shutdown pair with Esa Lindell on the second, or ends up skating alongside either Harley or Miro Heiskanen for a more balanced approach. Either way, it will allow the Stars to shelter their bottom pairing more.

Tanev’s offense has trended down this year, but he isn’t completely one-dimensional. For as traditional of a shutdown style as he plays, he also thrives at retrieving pucks and getting it out of his own zone with control, which should help clean up the Stars’ breakouts. His playing style does run some injury risk, and it likely will affect how his game ages from here. So the fact that the Stars brought him in without any future commitment just yet is a plus.

The slightly proactive approach benefits the Stars, too. Having him in the fold for potentially four extra games instead of waiting until deadline day should help in the race for first place in the Central.

On the flip side, this is a real disappointment for Calgary. This didn’t come down to the wire on deadline day and the Flames had to settle because there were not any better options. There is more than a week until the deadline, which should have been enough time to up the ante for Calgary. There was a lot of league-wide interest in Tanev — so how is this the best return for the Flames, especially with 50 percent salary retention? There are interesting elements to Artem Grushnikov’s game, but Calgary should have looked for someone with more certainty and upside without a first-round pick in the return. The one and only win for the Flames is that management recognizes what needs to be done, and won’t risk pending UFAs walking for nothing just to go on one more run.

Evidence grows that GM Brad Treliving has to get it 'right' on Maple Leafs blue line - Toronto Sun

Chris Tanev now off Toronto's radar after trade to Stars

That trade deadline can’t come soon enough.

Article content

Once general managers across the National Hockey League are done dealing at 3 p.m. EST on March 8, we can move on with our lives, free of the speculation that has been dominating every hockey conversation in the days before the deadline hits.

Article content

As it pertains to the Maple Leafs, the conversation is around the glaringly obvious need for a right-shooting defenceman (or two if GM Brad Treliving can swing more than one trade).

We know now that it won’t be Chris Tanev, who had been on Treliving’s radar all season.

The Dallas Stars had emerged as the front-runners to land Tanev, and that came to fruition on Wednesday night when they acquired him in a trade with the Calgary Flames for defenceman Artem Grushnikov, a 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 conditional third-round pick. The New Jersey Devils also were involved in the three-team deal.

Article content

In the loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, one that ended the Leafs’ seven-game winning streak, the importance of adding a right-handed shooter to the blue line was underlined. Timothy Liljegren remains day to day with undisclosed injury, and after the Leafs had a day off on Wednesday, it’s possible coach Sheldon Keefe will have to use six left-shooting defencemen on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, as he did versus the Golden Knights.

It wasn’t ideal, and it’s not something that can continue beyond the deadline if the Leafs want to give themselves the best chance for post-season success.

Beyond Liljegren, the Leafs’ defence-corps depth of right-handed shooters extends to Conor Timmins. The latter remains in recovery mode from mononucleosis, and when he has been healthy, he has played in just 16 games. If the Leafs had confidence he could be a full-time top-six D-man, Treliving wouldn’t be beating the bushes for another righty.

Advertisement 4

Article content

Regarding the usage of six left-shooting defencemen against Vegas, Keefe said afterward that the “the pairs in general were a bit of a challenge.”

And Morgan Rielly, who started the game to the right of TJ Brodie before the pair was split up following some shoddy play, said playing on the right was “challenging.”

“But I feel good over there,” Rielly said, not sounding overly convincing. “We try to work on that stuff in practice. There’s room for improvement.

“There’s an answer that I don’t want to give, but (playing in the defensive zone on the right side) is the opposite of what you’re used to, when you’re closing gaps, when you’re crossing over.

“It’s not about excuses. It’s actually easier in the offensive zone. There are good things as well. It’s just trying to get familiar with it.”

Advertisement 5

Article content

What Treliving has to do is get a righty who won’t need to get familiar with it. Whether it’s Matt Dumba or Sean Walker or Ilya Lyubushkin or Alexandre Carrier or someone else, the heat is increasing on Treliving to get something done.

COYOTES CONUNDRUM

The Leafs will resume their five-game home stand when the woeful Coyotes visit Scotiabank Arena.

While the plight of the present-day Coyotes carries more relevance as it pertains to the game on Thursday, we can’t ignore the run that the franchise has had in Toronto.

The Coyotes are 10-0-2 in the past 12 meetings with the Leafs at SBA, not having lost to Toronto in regulation since Oct. 17, 2002. That night, Leafs won 5-3 on the strength of two goals by Shayne Corson and three assists from Alex Mogilny. So, yes, it has been a minute since the Leafs celebrated at the final buzzer with a victory against the Coyotes. Toronto won in overtime in 2019-20 and in a shootout in 2013-14, and that has been it for more than 21 years at home.

Advertisement 6

Article content

As for the game at hand, the Coyotes arrive in free fall, having gone 0-11-2 in their past 13 games while being outscored 60-31. That included a 6-3 loss against the Leafs in Tempe, Ariz., last Wednesday. Former Leafs forward Alex Kerfoot is one of four Coyotes to play in every game and is fourth in team scoring with 34 points in 58 games (two more points than he had in 82 games with the Leafs in 2022-23).

Defenceman Sean Durzi, drafted by the Leafs in the second round in 2018 before he was sent to the Los Angeles Kings in January 2019 in the Jake Muzzin trade, leads the Coyotes in ice time with an average of 22 minutes 36 seconds a game.

Durzi, who was acquired by the Coyotes from the Kings in a trade last summer, just happens to shoot right.

LOOSE LEAFS

Auston Matthews, who scored his 50th and 51st goals against Arizona last week, has seven goals in 13 career games versus his hometown team … Though John Tavares missed a recent game, on Feb. 17 against Anaheim with a minor injury, the Leafs captain dismissed the idea that he appeared to be dealing with discomfort on the bench during the loss to Vegas. “That was just an equipment issue,” Tavares said. “Physically, I’m great.” Now, to get that great feeling going on the scoresheet. Tavares, playing in a reduced role on the third line, has just three points in his past seven games … Keefe’s next victory will be his 200th in the regular season since taking over behind the Leafs bench from the fired Mike Babcock in November 2019. Keefe, who has a record of 199-88-38 for a .612 winning percentage, will be the 87th coach to reach that milestone in NHL history … When winger Calle Jarnkrok returns after recovering from a broken knuckle, his next point will be the 300th of his NHL career.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Craig Roh dead at 33 - CBC.ca

Defensive lineman Craig Roh, who won a Grey Cup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2019, has died. He was 33.

Roh's wife, Chelsea, confirmed his death on social media.

"I wanted to let all of his followers know that after an 18-month battle with Stage IV colon cancer, God brought Craig home on Monday," she posted on the social media media platform X.

"Craig was not very public with his battle, as he truly just wanted to focus on bringing the best content and building the best products he could."

News of Roh's death hit former teammate Adam Bighill, a linebacker with the Blue Bombers, very hard.

"Craig was not only one of my closest friends but was like family," Bighill tweeted. "My [broken heart emoji] hurts so much for his family, and we have been hurting this whole 18 month journey.

"I could go on for hours of great things, but Craig was a devoted man of faith, and an amazing friend."

Derek Dennis, a retired former CFL offensive lineman, also took to social media to offer his condolences.

"Tremendous amount of respect for him as a teammate in Carolina to competitor in CFL," Dennis tweeted. "Rest easy brother and my condolences to his wife and family."

The six-foot-five, 266-pound Roh, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., played in the CFL with the B.C. Lions (2015-17) and Winnipeg (2018-19). He signed with the Toronto Argonauts in 2020 but the league didn't play that season due to the global pandemic.

"Craig was a consummate professional who always battled hard for his teammates," the Lions said in a statement.

"His dedication to representing the B.C. Lions and helping others was also evident during the many hours he put into our team's school programs. Our thoughts are with Craig's wife Chelsea, son Max and their entire family at this difficult time."

Roh had 64 tackles, 20 sacks and a forced fumble during his time with B.C. He recorded 46 tackles, 14 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery during his time with Winnipeg.

"A beautiful family lost a husband, father and a good man," former Lions head coach and GM Wally Buono posted on X. "Condolences to [Chelsea] and the Roh Family.

"It was a pleasure to have coached you [Craig]. Blessings to your family."

Roh didn't see any regular-season action with the Panthers.

A GoFundMe page has been established in Roh's memory. A celebration of life will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., on March 16.

Former BC Lions defensive lineman Craig Roh passes away at 33 | Offside - Daily Hive

Former BC Lions defensive end Craig Roh has died.

Roh’s widow, Chelsea, shared the news and details of his recent passing in an X post on Wednesday. She revealed that the Arizona native lost his battle with colon cancer.

“I wanted to let all of his followers know that after an 18-month battle with Stage IV colon cancer, God brought Craig home on Monday, February 26,” she wrote. “Craig was not very public with his battle, as he truly just wanted to focus on bringing the best content and building the best products he could.”

The Lions later shared a tribute of their own to social media.

“Our hearts go out to Craig’s wife Chelsea, son Max and their entire family at this difficult time,” the team wrote alongside photos of Roh’s time with the team. “RIP Craig.”

Roh, who was just 33 years old at the time of his passing, played three seasons with the BC Lions after a brief NFL stint with the Carolina Panthers.

Roh suited up for 45 games for BC, recording 64 tackles to go along with six sacks in 2015, seven sacks and one forced fumble in 2016, and seven more sacks in 2017.

Roh joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2018, winning his first Grey Cup with the team in 2019. He signed a contract with the Toronto Argonauts in 2020 but never suited up for a game as the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

In the years following his early retirement, Roh had amassed a large social media following, regularly producing coaching videos for his online program D-Line University.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover Roh’s medical expenses and future schooling for his and Chelsea’s son, Max.

Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah struggles in first spring training game - Toronto Star

The 26-year-old right-hander made his spring debut in Tuesday afternoon's exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers. It was his first appearance since getting optioned to the minors in August, and to suggest the outing did not go as planned would be a gross understatement.
