Infield prospect Kevin Smith meeting Blue Jays in Washington - Sportsnet.ca

Toronto Blue Jays infield prospect Kevin Smith is flying to Washington, D.C., to meet the team there, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi and Jamie Campbell report.

It was not immediately clear whether Smith was joining the major league roster or taxi squad. He is not on the team's 40-man roster, meaning someone else will need to be removed from the roster before he can be activated.

Smith, 25, is the Blue Jays' No. 23 prospect according to MLB.com. He was assigned to triple-A Buffalo for the first time this season and has been one of the Bisons' most productive hitters, slashing .286/.371/.576 while leading the team with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs. Defensively at triple-A he has spent the majority of his time at short stop but also played third base and both corner outfield positions.

The East Greenbush, N.Y., native was originally a fourth-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2017.

The Blue Jays close out their current road trip against the Nationals in Washington, D.C., Wednesday afternoon. You can watch the game on Sportsnet and SN Now beginning at 4:05 p.m. ET/ 1:05 p.m. PT.
