NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said at media availability in Palm Beach, Fla., on Friday that there's "no issue" with the Arizona Coyotes' debts, and that money owing to the city of Glendale has "been taken care of."
Bettman, speaking after the second day of the annual NHL Board of Governors meeting, speculated that the city of Glendale had "an agenda" while dealing with the Coyotes, perhaps because the team announcing it is looking to move in the near future has "agitated" the city.
Bettman didn't directly address a report that the Coyotes' arena operator says the NHL team still owes more than $2.706 million for rent and other expenses at Gila River Arena, only saying "they're fine and they will be fine." He added that the "Coyotes aren't going anywhere" other than to another arena in the greater Phoenix area, attempting to quash rumours of a move to another city, which has rumoured to be Houston or Quebec City.
He added that when a franchise "that needs work" is taken over by new ownership, sometimes during the due diligence of the transition of running that team, "you uncover things." He said owner Alex Meruelo, whose ownership group bought the Coyotes in 2019, is "working through all of those."
The Coyotes have struggled both on the ice and off since relocating to Arizona from Winnipeg for the 1996-97 season. The team has gone through myriad ownership changes, has changed its name once, has moved from an NBA building in Phoenix to the current rink in suburban Glendale, was taken over by the NHL in 2009 after an owner declared bankruptcy and reportedly owed Wayne Gretzky money for his coaching stint with the team.
