Rangers and Panthers illustrate how goal celebrations can turn violent - Russian Machine Never Breaks

This year’s Eastern Conference Finals series between the New York Rangers and Florida Panthers hit a boiling point early in Friday’s Game 2.

Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck opened the game’s scoring at the 4:12 mark of the first period with a tap-in at the post of Sergei Bobrovsky’s net. Then chaos erupted before he could truly celebrate the big goal.

Panthers winger Carter Verhaeghe initiated the conflict by shoving Alexis Lafreniere to the ice. Members of New York’s goal hug did not like that much sending all five members of each team locking up in one-on-one battles. The primary duel came between Trocheck and Matthew Tkachuk.

Tkachuk was the clear victor of his bout with Trocheck, pummeling the goal scorer to the ice. For his troubles, the Panthers’ top forward was given a two-minute minor for roughing. Verhaeghe and Lafreniere were also given roughing minors, giving New York a power play.

The violence didn’t end there. Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov rocked Alexander Wennberg with a huge, open-ice hit just over five minutes after the goal. After Kulikov was initially being assessed a major penalty for the hit, officials reviewed the play and lessened his penalty to a two-minute minor for interference.

New York was unable to convert on either of their power play tries in the opening frame which would end up being costly. Florida was given their first man advantage with less than three minutes remaining in the period after Barclay Goodrow interfered with Aleksander Barkov.

Verhaeghe tied the game just under a minute later with a snap shot that beat a heavily screened Igor Shesterkin. The game headed into its first intermission with the score tied 1-1.

Florida is already up 1-0 in the series after shutting the Rangers out 3-0 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. The Panthers are attempting to return to the Stanley Cup Final after falling in five games to the Vegas Golden Knights last year.
