The charges filed against world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler related to his arrest before the second round of the PGA Championship two weeks ago have been dropped.

According to Golf Channel's Todd Lewis, the prosecutor in Louisville, Kentucky, dropped all four charges Scheffler was facing Wednesday.

Per ESPN, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell said Wednesday that prosecutors "cannot not move forward" with the case against Scheffler.

ESPN's Mark Schlabach reported that Scheffler was arrested after going around traffic caused by a fatal accident in an effort to get to the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club. Following a run-in with a police officer, he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler took to Instagram on Wednesday and released the following statement:

"Earlier today, I was informed by my attorney, Steven Romines, that all charges were formally dismissed in regard to the incident outside Valhalla Golf Club on May 17.

"As I stated previously, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding. I hold no ill will toward Officer Gillis. I wish to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same. Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard. This was a severe miscommunication in a chaotic situation.

"I appreciate the support during the past two weeks and want to again encourage everyone to remember the real tragedy of May 17. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with John Mills and his family, and I hope to personally offer my condolences now that the case is over. May John rest in peace."

The incident involving Scheffler occurred after Mills—a worker at the tournament—was struck and killed by a shuttle bus near Valhalla Golf Club.

The officer, Det. Bryan Gillis, alleged that Scheffler did not heed his traffic directions and warnings. Gillis also wrote in the arrest report that Scheffler dragged him down by accelerating his car, causing "pain, swelling and abrasions" to his knee and left wrist.

Following his arrest, Scheffler said he was unaware of the deadly accident that had occurred and suggested everything was a misunderstanding, telling ESPN's Jeff Darlington:

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."

According to ESPN, Gillis was disciplined with "corrective action" after the arrest since he failed to follow proper protocols by not having his bodycam video recorder active during the incident.

Shortly after his arrest, Scheffler was released from custody, and he made it back to the course prior to his tee time.

The 27-year-old, two-time Masters champion proceeded to card his second-best round of the tournament with a five-under 66.

A two-over 73 in the third round eliminated Scheffler from contention, but he bounced back with a six-under 65 in the final round and finished tied for eighth at 13-under, eight shots behind winner Xander Schauffele.
